Quickbooks Pro 2008 – The file you specified cannot be opened

by May 17, 2014

In QuickBooks 2008 running on Windows Vista you get an error when you try to print a report.

The file you specified cannot be opened. Make sure that it is not currently being used by another program or a read-only file. The Windows error was ‘The file exists.’

You followed the instructions on the Quickbooks support site about the qbprint.qbp file but the instructions do not resolve your problem.

The problem is that users only have read access on qbprint.qbp in the folder “C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks 2008”.
You could launch QuickBooks as an admin by right clicking the QB 2008 icon and choosing run as administrator but I prefer to right click the file “C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks 2008\qbprint.qbp” and choose properties > security tab > Edit > Select Users > Put a check in Full Control > Click OK.

That should resolve your report print problem.

Note: the location is “ProgramData” not “Program Files”

If you are running Vista Home Premium and there is no security tab for files/folders then you’ll need to turn on the security tab in Windows Vista.
